The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 was a heroic yet tragic 63-day struggle to liberate Warsaw from Nazi German occupation during the final year of World War II. It was launched by the Home Army (Armia Krajowa, AK), Poland's principal resistance movement, at a time when Allied forces were breaking out from the Normandy beachhead and the Soviet Red Army had reached the eastern bank of the Vistula River.
Warsaw might have become one of the first European capitals to be liberated. Instead, a combination of military and political miscalculations, together with the geopolitical decisions and rivalries of Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, sealed the city's fate.
