Order of Virtuti Militari, Poland’s highest decoration for gallantry in the field, was awarded to only 26,000 persons since its inception in 1792 to the end of the WWII. During the Warsaw Uprising 1944, the Virtuti MIlitari was awarded to 800 soldiers.
